Salmon Creek Fourth of July Race
Salmon Creek, Juneau
July 4th 1913 (Friday) 12:00AM
Location: out to the Salmon Creek power house and back The Fourth of July celebration at Juneau, run in rain that fell "at unimportant intervals". Frank Morris of Haines won the marathon race to the Salmon Creek power house and return in 29 minutes 31 seconds. "Marathon" is the 1913 usage for any long foot race rather than the modern distance; 29 minutes rules out a full out-and-back from the town centre, so the start lay nearer the creek. J. Hollering was second. The Dispatch gives his time as 29 minutes, which is faster than the winner's, so it is not stored as printed - the paper appears to have dropped his seconds. The other entries were Cropley, Drew, Koes, Price and Williams. The item names no times for them and says they entered rather than that they finished, so they are recorded here and not as results. SOURCE: The Daily Alaska Dispatch, Juneau, Saturday 5 July 1913, issue 78, "Celebration Surpassed All Expectations - Rain Fell, but at Unimportant Intervals".
