Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet University of Alaska campus, Auke LakeDistance: 10 miles Location: the University of Alaska campus at Auke Lake, south around the Mendenhall Loop Road Start Time: 8:00 AM The second Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, co-sponsored by the University of Alaska and the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department as a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Entrants collected sponsors pledging per mile completed, with no minimum, and a runner could sponsor themselves. Free t-shirts went to the first 60 finishers, refreshments were laid on at the five-mile checkpoint, and a Parks and Recreation van patrolled the course to offer a ride to anyone who tired early. A new perpetual trophy, designed by Julie Jacobson, an art student at J-DCC, went on permanent display at the University with the winners' names engraved on its base. Two Juneau-Douglas High School students set the fastest times. Steve Schmitz covered the ten miles in 58:34 with Carl Ellis close behind on 59:12, and Celeste Thibodeau, also at J-D, was quickest of the women. NINETY-ONE PEOPLE RAN. The Empire printed only the top three of each of eight brackets and said the full list of times was available at the Parks and Recreation Department, so the 22 runners held here are that published selection, not the finishing order of the field. The Empire's prose gives Celeste Thibodeau 1:21.13 and its bracket list 1:21.11. The list is used here; it also fits the claim that Shelley James finished three seconds behind her.DefaultRaceDirector Unassigned1978-04-30 08:00:00nonoyesRegistration Form
