The eleventh annual Flannagan's Run, Saturday 20 March 1993, starting and finishing at the Mount Jumbo Gym in Douglas at 10 a.m., sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation with Wendie Marriott as race director. Eight dollars for adults and three for youths, entries taken at 218 Municipal Building until 4:30 p.m. the Friday before - or by fax, which was worth advertising in 1993. Part of the 1993 Empire Cup Runners Series. A one-mile course and a five-mile, turning at the cone by the Bureau of Mines and finishing up the B Street hill. |

The Empire counted about a hundred runners and called the race the traditional start of the Juneau road running season; its reporter watched from the corner of Douglas Highway and B Street with snow still on the road. Chris Smith won the five-mile in 28:04, two seconds ahead of Jim Douglas, with Edgar Blatchford third. Susan Arnold was the women's winner in 33:25. In the mile the middle-school pair Asher Hall and Travis Zangri renewed what the Empire called a long-standing duel, Hall taking it in 7:04 to Zangri's 7:07 after saving something for the B Street hill; Rebecca Hall was fifth and the first woman home in 8:10. The results here are the UNOFFICIAL ones the Empire printed on Sunday 21 March. The paper noted that Parks and Recreation would release official results the following Monday, and those are not in this archive. Two oddities in that list are reproduced as printed rather than tidied. Brandon Hughes is placed 21st in 15:45 ahead of Dan Hughes 22nd in 15:44, and Mark Williams 43rd in 41:32 ahead of Barb Murray 44th in 41:23 - both pairs run backwards against their placings. And Jason Hetherington is printed twice in the five-mile, 16th in 33:58 and 33rd in 36:58; only the first is recorded here, because the two times differ and there is no way to tell a mis-keyed line from a second man of the same name. |
