JTRR May Day Mud (and Mountain) Run 2000 Event Page

Event Name May Day Mud (and Mountain) Run
Location Fish Creek parking lot, North Douglas
Weather 41°F, overcast (felt like 37°), wind 3 mph gusting 9 at the start, from Open-Meteo’s historical archive
Description Distance: 7 miles and 3 miles, with two crossings of Gastineau Channel
Location: Fish Creek parking lot, North Douglas
The 20th May Day Mud Run, and the year the mountain arrived. Both courses went up the Fish Creek trail toward Eaglecrest, back down, across the channel and back to the Fish Creek parking lot - two crossings instead of the single point-to-point of every earlier running, and a good deal slower for it.
History Hiram Henry, 25, won the seven mile in 1:04:37, four seconds ahead of Steven Schmitz, with Glenn Frick, 61 and known around Juneau as the Silver Fox, third in 1:05:43. Tara Jeans was the first woman in 1:27:06.
Brian Goettler won the three mile in 33:56 from Allen Toms in 35:29 and Jim Ustasiewski in 36:23. Jamie Bursell led the women in 46:54. 46 finished across the two races, and a forty-seventh, Lynne Johnson, is listed over seven miles with no time recorded.
Henry, who ran in his shirt from the 2000 Antarctica Marathon, was clear about who had run the better race. "I might have been faster, but he was smarter," he said of Frick. "He made me feel like a naive little kid. He was running the race in control. He was a sly old fox, tricking the other runners. He'd be up on the trail confusing people. He'd see them and he'd yell, 'Oh, wrong trail,' then he'd stay on that trail. He played on our insecurities."

7 Mile 7 miles 16 Lynne Johnson is held without a time: the Empire lists her as DNF while still ranking her fourth female. The seventh finisher is published as "P. Tom Moritz (Paul Meyer)"; the bracket is not explained and only the plain name is held. Sex is recorded only for the four women the paper ranks inline. One oddity worth a second look: the Empire ranks four women here, skipping the 13th finisher Steph Thomas, who is on file as female. Either the ranking is incomplete or the record is wrong.
3 Mile 3 miles 31 Two finishers are published with a second name in brackets, "Black Rockwell (Aronson)" and "Bambi (Lund)", and the paper does not say why - a former surname, a correction, or something else. Only the plain names are held. Sex is recorded for the twelve women the paper ranks inline and for nobody else.
