Capitol Building, Juneau to Sandy Beach, Douglas July 12th 1980 (Saturday) 9:00AM | The 1980 Governor's Cup, Juneau's biggest race of the season, run on a Saturday in a light drizzle from the Capitol Building along the road to Douglas and down the home stretch to Sandy Beach. The course was 3.5 miles, as the Empire's caption states, and finished at Sandy Beach. By 1981 the race was three miles and finished at the Tlingit and Haida Center, so the two years are not the same course. DuFresne previewed the course mile by mile in the Empire a few days beforehand, calling it "the second Gvernor's Cup, slated for July 12 at 9 a.m." and describing a mass start at the steps of the state Capitol, with Lt. Gov. Terry Miller raising the starting gun, then 4th Street, Calhoun Avenue, past the Governor's Mansion, down to Egan Drive and across the Juneau-Douglas Bridge, through West Juneau and over three hills to Douglas Highway and First Street, finishing in the Sandy Beach Recreation Area. His sections run from 0-0.2 up to 2.7-3.5, which is the course measuring itself at three and a half miles. A field of 140 had pre-registered that morning, and there were t-shirts for the first 400. Grant's Plaza to the Juneau Fire Hall, Juneau May 24th 1980 (Saturday) 10:00AM | A ten-kilometre run and walk for the American Heart Association, raising money through pledges for each runner, put on by the Friends of Hearts and Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance rather than by the running club. The Empire calls it the first National Run For Life Day held in Juneau. The event was non-competitive and no results are recorded. The finish at the Juneau Fire Hall was followed by cardio-pulmonary resuscitation demonstrations and free blood pressure checks. The Empire printed the start as 10 p.m., which cannot be right beside a registration time of 9 a.m.; 10 a.m. is recorded here. University of Alaska Juneau campus, Auke Lake May 4th 1980 (Sunday) 9:00AM | Distance: 10 miles, with a seven-mile and a two-mile option Location: University of Alaska Juneau campus, Auke Lake Course: out from the campus along the Mendenhall Loop Road and back Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 1 dollar, plus a sponsor pledging at least 50 cents a mile The fourth Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, the main fundraiser for Juneau's Special Olympics programme.
