| Event Description | Distance: 26.2 miles Location: start at the Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, following the Loop Road through the Mendenhall Valley Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 5 dollars, at Parks and Recreation or at the race 45 minutes before the start The Juneau Marathon, sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation, with a no-host picnic for participants and their families at the Lena Recreation area afterwards. Guy Thibodeau won in 2:31:53; Rosemary Gute was the first woman in 3:03:52, a time the Empire still called the women's course record seven years later. THIS FULL LIST EXISTS BECAUSE A READER COMPLAINED. The Empire's original report named only the top ten, and Julianna Humphreys wrote in on July 30: "you could have and should have at least printed the names of all the participants. The top ten finishers were listed, but there were others who finished the race too." The paper replied "You're right", blamed space, and printed all twenty-four finishers with their ages and their home towns if they were not from Juneau. Those ages are kept on each row here. DATE: the preview of Wednesday 22 July is headed "Marathon this Saturday" and then says in its first line that the race is "this Sunday" - 25 against 26 July. Saturday is used here because every Juneau Marathon on this site with a date from a source is a Saturday. The event previously carried no date at all. |
