Juneau November 10th 1984 (Saturday) 10:00AM | Veteran's 10K Run, Saturday 10 November 1984. Alan Graves won in 33:59.54. Twenty-six finishers. Times were published to hundredths of a second and are stored that way. Genders were not published and are not recorded. A ten kilometer race, as 1983 and 1990 were; the distance became 8K by 1992. Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, Juneau July 21st 1984 (Saturday) 8:00AM | The 1984 Juneau Marathon and half marathon, 26.2 and 13.1 miles from the Mendenhall Glacier parking lot at 8 a.m. on Saturday 21 July, run by Juneau Parks and Recreation at seven dollars a head. Twenty-four finished the half and eight the full. Al Graves won the half in 1:10:38 and Chuck O'Clair the marathon in 3:06:43. This event was recorded here for years under the date 11 August 1984. The Empire printed these results on Tuesday 24 July, and the Parks and Recreation notice gives the date as Saturday 21 July; both dates are Saturdays, which is presumably how the wrong one lasted. Times are recorded to the hundredth of a second as the Empire printed them. Three pairs finished level and are shown as ties. Alaska State Capitol, Juneau July 14th 1984 (Saturday) 9:00AM | The 1984 Governor's Cup, three miles from the Capitol at 9 a.m. on Saturday 14 July, run by Juneau Parks and Recreation and open to all ages at seven dollars a head. One hundred and ninety finishers - 110 in the men's division and 80 in the women's. Rick Thibodeau won in 16:44 with Matt Mulligan two seconds behind him; Laurel Lamont was the first woman in 19:36, which would have placed her 24th overall. The Empire printed times to a tenth of a second wherever two runners shared a second, and those tenths are kept here because they are the only thing separating the pairs. Douglas July 4th 1984 (Wednesday) 10:00AM | The Fourth of July two-mile at Douglas, 1984. Sixty-three finishers. Mat Mulligan won in 9.54, six seconds ahead of Michael Zagars. Two runners are printed as Tom Green, 40th in 13.53 and 58th in 18.40. They are recorded as two men, because one runner cannot finish twice. North Douglas, Juneau June 30th 1984 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Juneau Parks and Recreation's annual half marathon, 13.1 miles on North Douglas, run with a 6.55-mile quarter marathon alongside it on Saturday 30 June 1984. Auke Lake, Juneau May 5th 1984 (Saturday) 9:00AM | The 1984 Mendenhall Mudpuddle, ten miles on Saturday 5 May. Fifty-four finishers, scored in six age and sex divisions. Alan Graves and Jerry Buckley both ran 54:31 for the fastest time of the day, Graves winning the men's 27-39 division and Buckley the 40-and-over. The Empire's overall-place column gives both Ken DeRoux and Gene Miller 23rd. Miller's 1:08.36 falls between DeRoux's 1:08.20 and the 24th-placed 1:08.54, so the repeat is a misprint; the times are what is recorded here. Tlingit-Haida Community Center, Salmon Creek, Juneau to Fish Creek, Douglas April 28th 1984 (Saturday) 5:00PM | Fourth annual May Day Mud Race, 5:00 PM start - timed to the tide, which was low at 5:45 PM at 1.4 feet. A 7.9 mile point-to-point: start at the Tlingit-Haida Community Center by the Salmon Creek Hatchery on Old Glacier Highway, finish at Fish Creek on the North Douglas Highway. The course follows Glacier Highway past Twin Lakes, crosses the Egan Expressway at the Switzer Creek exit, then follows Sunny Point Road to its north end before entering the Mendenhall Wetlands - and then across the Gastineau Channel mudflats behind the airport runway at low tide. Sponsored by the Taku Striders, Jerry Buckley and John Ingalls. Entry $4, payable half an hour before the start. Prizes in three men's and three women's classes - cash, pizzas, movie tickets, sporting gear and gift certificates - with a top open division cash prize of $50. Refreshments and a fire for warming up at the finish. Recorded from a Juneau Empire preview article and its course map. No results were published there and none are held here. Forty-two finishers are recorded, from the Empire's results in five divisions. The paper's overall-placing column runs to 43, and numbers 8, 26, 28 and 41 appear in none of the five, so at least four more people finished whose names are not in the clipping. Dave Michael won in 48:33. Two pairs are shown as ties on the same overall place: Joe Smith and Jean Smith, 27th on 1:04.29 in different divisions, and Jim Buckley and Adam Bernstein, 40th on 1:12.10.
