Sperl-Gamble-Stevens Memorial Run

Location: Juneau
The first Sperl-Gamble-Stevens Memorial Run, in memory of Juneau-Douglas High School students killed in the Viet Nam War. Entry fees fund a scholarship for a JDHS graduate.
The memorial honors Donald Sperl, Charles Gamble Jr., Michael Stevens and Kirk Barkley. Rick and Guy Thibodeau tied for the fastest time of the day in 27:19, and Nancy Pease won the women's division in 32:42. The Empire put the field at thirty-nine; thirty-four finishers were printed. Organized in part by Karl Schoeppe. The scholarship's first award, 800 dollars, went to JDHS graduate Brian Holst.
