The eighth annual Sweetheart Guy/Gal Relay, Saturday 10 February 1990, at Mount Jumbo Gym in Douglas, and the first race of the 1990 Empire Cup Runners Series. "With the season putting an icy blanket on all but the most determined of runner, there must have been a great deal of running energy built up," the Empire wrote. A record turnout transformed the event "from a sleepy event drawing about a dozen people into a major race competition": 28 two-person teams and 56 runners, which the paper put at 42 more than in 1989. Icy road conditions kept the times slow. Sue Mello and Andy Grossman won it in 33:32, Mello running 14:54 for the two-mile leg and Grossman 18:38 for the three. The fastest individual legs of the day were Michelle Ramsey's 14:46 over two miles and Rick Thibodeau's 17:41 over three. Teams were one male and one female of any age, and either partner could take either leg: the sixth-placed team sent Art Peterson out over the two miles and Shelly James over the three. The paper printed both leg times and the team total for all 28 teams, so every line carries its own check, and all 28 add up exactly. The team times shown here are not stored: they are summed from the two legs, which is how this site has always handled relays. Three names are printed differently from the way the archive holds them, and each of those rows carries a note: Karen Laquaglia appears as "Laguaghe", Michelle Ramsey as "Michele", and Cathy August Miller as "August-Miller". |
