The Alaska Coastal Homes Fun Run-Walk, Saturday 6 October 1990, at North Douglas. A field of almost 90 took part in three races - a mile, a 5K and a 10K - set up as one event, and all three counted for the Empire Cup Runners Series. Of the runners, the Empire counted 21 aged 19 and under, 16 of them under 13. Matthew Kacmarski led the young runners with an overall victory in the men's mile in 7:05. Only Kathy Miller, who won the women's mile in 6:44, was faster over the distance. At the other end of the range, Al Graves won the 10K in 34:26, from Frank Young in 34:34 and Jim Douglas in 35:24. Jetta Whittaker was first among the women in 44:32. Arturo Rodriguez won the 5K in 17:10, with Dave Avila second and Roger Kacmarski third; Shelly James won the women's side in 18:48, from Sue Norvell and Sue Cheeley. The 10K runners started at the False Outer Point car park, headed south on North Douglas Highway to the intersection with Fish Creek Road, and returned to the finish line at the starting point. The Empire's count of 21 runners aged 19 and under does not quite reconcile: the three 13-and-under divisions hold 16, and the men's 10K 14-19 division holds four. The twenty-first is presumably in one of the mile's two "Others" divisions, which the paper leaves unaged. |
