Weather 54°F, mostly clear, wind 1 mph gusting 9 at the start, from Open-Meteo’s historical archive
Description Distance: 5 kilometers, with a one mile walk Location: Mendenhall River School, covered area behind the school Start Time: 9:00 AM Race Director: Margaret Feige and Craig Farrington Registration Fee: 10 dollars preregistered and 13 on race day for ages 14 and up, 5 and 7 for 13 and under Contact: Foggy Mountain Shop or the Juneau Racquet Club The second Beat the Odds, an all-women's awareness run in the fight against breast cancer, founded the year before by Cathy Bressette. It was moved from 14 August to 4 September to avoid a clash with the Golden North Salmon Derby. 124 ran the 5K and 270 walked the mile, against the almost 300 runners and walkers the first year drew. Merry Ellefson won the run in 18:30, nearly two minutes clear of Joann Quigg in 20:19, with Cecile Elliott third in 21:13. Cathy Bressette finished 45th in 25:16. Monika Bethers and Lena Darnall shared the fastest walk at 10:11. Sponsors were the Alaska Health Fair, Forget-Me-Not Floral of Petersburg, the Inlandboatmen's Union Alaska Region, the Juneau Empire, KINY and KSUP, Southeast Roadrunners, Temsco and the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Club. The first 300 registered got a long-sleeve shirt. The table prints no ages, no divisions and no genders, so none are recorded here. The race was aimed at women, but men who turned up were allowed to run, and a first name settles nothing either way - Michael Kohan, 91st in the run, is a woman. Six runners and fourteen walkers are printed without a time and appear at the foot of their race. Four more are stored without one because the paper contradicts itself: Barbara Rufe 41st at 24:02 between 24:59 and 25:03, Denise Olmsted 46th at 24:31 between 25:16 and 25:33, Michael Kohan 91st at 30:29 between 30:38 and 30:50, and walker Nikki Sullivan 14th at 11:56 between 11:17 and 11:51. Three times printed with 60 seconds are read as the next minute, so Cathy Carney is 29:00, Sharon Gill 16:00 and Sheryl Weinberg 19:00. Results transcribed from the Juneau Empire's printed final results.
