The Mount Roberts Trail Challenge Run. Organisers included an "over the hill" award for everyone who beat their own age in minutes.
History The Mount Roberts Trail Challenge Run of Saturday 27 July 1991, from South Franklin Street up to the 2,000-foot level, with a field of 68 runners aged 9 to 57.

"Just as the finish line - the cross just above the tree line on Mount Roberts - came into sight, the hardest stretch of Saturday's mountain run began," the Empire wrote. Steve Schmitz won in 27:54, within 90 seconds of his personal best on the course. Ben Van Alen was second in 30:26 and John McConnochie third in 30:36. Betsy Fischer was the fastest woman in 39:03.

The trail was slimy from days of rain, though the morning itself was reported as "OK". "The trail was very slimy, very muddy. If you didn't have shoes with a lot of grip, you found it very frustrating in spots," Fischer said. The worst of it came at the end, on the switchbacks approaching the cross up a steep ledge where the trail leaves the forest canopy. "Runners had a heck of a time getting through that. Many found themselves slipping off the trail. There's one big rock you have to climb over, and it's hard when it's wet and slimy."

Organisers gave an "over the hill" award to everyone who beat their age in minutes. Schmitz, at 30, was the youngest to manage it; Andy Grossman had the biggest margin, 42 years old and home in 31:33.

Among the youngest runners, Sarah Fischer, 10, finished in 49:24 and Rebecca Hall, also 10, exactly two minutes behind her. Erin Shine, 9, ran 52:21. Joanie James, at 57 the oldest in the field, finished in 48:09.

ONLY NINE RUNNERS ARE HELD HERE. No finish list survives in the clippings, so these are the nine the report names out of 68. Rebecca Hall's time is arithmetic rather than a reading, worked from Sarah Fischer's and the gap the paper gives; her row says so.
