Distance: 5 kilometers, accurately measured Location: start at the Dimond Courthouse, downtown Juneau; finish in the parking lot at the base of Hospital Drive Course: past the Governor's Mansion, across Gold Creek on Calhoun, left on 12th Street and right on Glacier Avenue to the finish. Re-routed from previous years to remove a hilly section in the highlands, and flat and fast as a result. Start Time: 10:00 AM. Pre-registered runners arrive about 9:30 for bibs and shirts; race-day registration from 9:00. Registration Fee: 5 dollars in advance with a T-shirt for the first 200, or 6 dollars on the day; 1 dollar for youngsters 13 and under Contact: Mike McKrill, 789-9116 Sponsored by the Southeast Road Runners and the Juneau Racquet Club. The Governor's Cup Fun Run of Saturday 13 July 1991, five kilometres from the Dimond Courthouse downtown to the base of Hospital Drive, drawing 225 participants. Rick Thibodeau edged his brother Guy by three seconds at the line to defend his title, in 15:20 - thirteen seconds faster than his 1990 winning time, though on a course the organisers described as slightly different and more accurately measured. Art Rodriguez was third overall in 16:16. Shelly James successfully defended her own title in 18:50, from Joann Quigg in 20:26 and Mihkel Maier in 20:34. The course had been re-routed to remove a hilly section in the highlands, which made it flat and fast. "The course is simple and straightforward. In the past, the course was kind of crazy - it was windy and easy to get lost. This year we have it real simple," said the organiser, Mike McKrill. The men's and women's winners have their names engraved on the perpetual Governor's Cup trophy, and for the four years to 1991 the engravers had written Rick Thibodeau and Shelly James. The Empire called this the eighth annual running. That does not fit the rest of the archive, which holds Governor's Cups from 1979 and 1980 and calls the 2000 race the 23rd annual; the three numberings cannot all be right, and the paper's is recorded here as its own claim. ONLY SIX RUNNERS ARE HELD HERE. No finish list survives in the clippings for this race, so these are the six the report names out of a field of 225. Guy Thibodeau's time is arithmetic rather than a reading, worked from his brother's and the three-second gap the paper gives; his row says so.
