The annual May Day Mud Run.
History The May Day Mud Run of Sunday 30 April 1995, over a seven-mile long course and a three-mile short one. 81 finished.

"There were plenty of natural and man-made barriers to entertain even the hardiest runner," the Empire wrote, "and it only took a few seconds for some runners to hit the first one."

Guy Thibodeau won the long course in 42 minutes 32 seconds, from Laddie Shaw in 45:19 and Jerry Buckley in 45:27. Dawn Rider was the fastest woman in 58:50. Paul Pusich won the three-mile in 23:45, with Shane Quigley second in 27:08 and Camdon Toohey third in 28:55; the first woman home on the short course was Josee Leclerc of Whitehorse, Yukon, in 29:35.

Keeping to the run's off-road tradition, the long course required runners to pick their own fastest trail route between the start and the finish - which is how the sixth-placed man came to run into a fence. "I followed Guy right into a chain-link fence at the start," said Phil Moritz. He and some other runners had followed Thibodeau along a dirt trail right at the starting line, and the trail led straight to a fence, with Thibodeau nowhere to be seen.

"Ben (Van Alen) and I thought we were in first and second place until we saw them - Thibodeau, Shaw and Buckley - at the finish line," Moritz said. "We didn't pass them, and we didn't think there was another route." Van Alen finished fifth and Moritz sixth.

SOURCES: "Experience is key in May Day Mud Run" by Richard F. Schmitz, Juneau Empire; and the finish lists, Monday 1 May 1995, page 10, headed "Results of the annual May Day Mud Run, April 30".

NOTES ON THE LIST. No field total is printed, so the 81 cannot be checked against one - but both lists run consecutively from first place with no gaps, and every one of the eight times the report quotes agrees with the list.

One runner in the short course is printed with an initial for a given name, as "S Fisher", and is recorded that way. Jerry Buckley is held under the spelling the archive already carries for him, Gerald.
