Distance: 10 kilometers, with a 1-mile run Location: Juneau The annual Glacier 10-kilometer run. |
| History |
The annual Glacier 10-kilometer run of Saturday 15 April 1995, with 48 finishers. Rick Thibodeau won in 34 minutes 44 seconds. The Empire's report made the story Gary Smith, the runner-up: "Gary Smith may be living here temporarily - he's in Juneau to work on a construction project downtown - but the name he makes for himself among runners may be a little more permanent. Even if he never catches Rick Thibodeau." Smith ran 34:53 and Philip Millard was third in 35:20. Dawn Rider was the fastest woman in 43:30. Smith had come to running late. "All I did was swim when I was (age) 6-14. Then I started to run in high school, and I ran cross country on a scholarship at North Idaho College," he said. The previous summer he had bought a road bike, entered Sitka's Julie Hughes Triathlon, and gone on to compete in two of them in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and the Spokane Troika, placing second in the latter with a time of 2 hours 2 minutes. THE MILE'S RESULTS WERE NEVER PUBLISHED. The finish list carries the heading and one sentence: "Results are not available from the Glacier 10K 1 mile." The race is recorded here with no finishers because that absence is the paper's, not this archive's. SOURCES: "A quick Glacier 10K run / Thibodeau and Rider win race" by Richard F. Schmitz, Juneau Empire, Sunday 16 April 1995; and the finish list on page 20, headed "Results of the annual Glacier 10-kilometer run, Saturday April 15". NOTES ON THE LIST. The table and the report disagree about the front of the race. The table places Rick Thibodeau first and Keith Levy second in the men's 35-39 division on the same time, 34:44, while the report says Thibodeau's 34:44 was nine seconds faster than the runner-up - and Gary Smith's 34:53 is exactly nine seconds slower. If Levy also ran 34:44 then the race had joint leaders and Smith was third. Both times are stored as printed and both rows carry a note; there is no way from here to say which figure is wrong. Nicki Germain and Mary Bedore genuinely tied for third in the women's 35-39 on 56:45, printed with the place repeated. |
